609 Request vs a Real Credit Report Dispute
FCRA §609 is mostly about what is in your file and, in some cases, the sources. FCRA §611 is the investigation of a specific inaccuracy. YouTube “609 letters” that demand deletion without a fact are not a secret statute. They are incomplete mail.
What 609 actually covers
File disclosures: a copy of your consumer report, and in specified situations information about sources. It is how you see the file. It is not a command that accurate negatives vanish.
What 611 actually covers
You identify information as inaccurate or incomplete. The agency must reasonably investigate, including with the furnisher. Unverified items should be corrected or deleted. That is the credit report dispute letter.
When a file/source request still helps
After a “verified” result you do not believe. Use method of verification. Or when you need to know who furnished a line you do not recognize.
