Late Payments
When a Goodwill Letter Is Worth Trying for a Late Payment
Goodwill letters are not guaranteed, but they can be worth trying when a late payment was isolated and the account is current.
It is a request, not a right
A goodwill letter asks a creditor for a courtesy adjustment. The creditor is not required to say yes.
Your history matters
Goodwill works best when the late payment is unusual and you otherwise paid responsibly. A repeated pattern is harder to explain.
Make it human and brief
Explain what happened, what changed, and why the account will stay current. Keep blame out of it.
Follow up respectfully
If the first answer is no, a polite follow-up can sometimes reach a different team.
