How to Dispute Credit Report Errors
A practical process for reviewing reports, documenting errors, mailing disputes, and tracking bureau responses.
Pull all three reports
Use AnnualCreditReport.com so you are reviewing Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. A mistake can appear on one report and not another.
Document the exact error
Do not write vague disputes. List the furnisher, account number, date, balance, status, and the specific fact that is wrong.
Send proof
Attach copies of statements, payment confirmations, identity theft reports, court records, or creditor letters that support your dispute.
Track the timeline
Credit bureaus generally must investigate and respond within the required investigation window. Save every letter and result.
